What is Myofascial Release Therapy?

Myofascial Release Therapy is a treatment that effectively releases constrictions in the fascia. Fascia is the connective tissue that runs continuously throughout the whole body from head to toe. Myofascial tissue is the fascia which surrounds, interweaves, and connects every fiber, fasical, and bundle of every muscle, following through to every tendon, connecting muscle to bone. 40% of muscle weight is fascia. This tissue is stretched by pinning the fascia and stretching through movement.

Why do I need Myofascial Release?

As children our fascia is healthy, supple, flexible, and acts as a lubricant for our muscles to slide over other muscles, bones, and organs comfortably and easily as we move in our day to day life. As we age, our fascia tightens through physical stresses, including repetitive movements, injury, overwork, unhealthy nutrition, or harmful habits, and natural desiccation of our tissues. Emotional and mental stress also affect the tension of the body’s fascia. Fascia which was once soft, pliable, and elastic becomes hard, rigid, dense, and inelastic. Fascia that was once a lubricant becomes an adhesive. When this happens, body movement is restricted. Muscles will compensate to make movement possible and imbalances will occur within the body. Without intervention, tight fascia in the body will eventually cause pain as the constriction presses muscles against muscles, bones, or nerves. Myofacial Release will reverse this process and return the fascia to its once elastic and flexible state, which allows for more space and ease in the body as well as more freedom of movement in the world.

Who should receive Myofascial Release Therapy?

If you suffer from any of the following: muscle tension, tension headaches, tight joints, body pain, imbalanced body structure, limited range of motion, tight or weak muscles, poor posture, or repetitive movements such as typing or standing/sitting for work, Myofascial Release can help with immediate results!

What should I expect from a Myofascial Release session?

Through focused strokes the therapist works together with the client to apply pressure to the shortened muscle, then keeping the pressure stretch the myofascial tissues. This therapy is done without oil and the height of sensation of this work is similar to that of a Deep Tissue Massage. Myofascial Release will leave the client feeling free, light, easy, and empty of pain in whatever joint or fascia are is worked on. Myofascial Release therapy has long lasting benefits and the work will aid all other bodywork. Due to the continuous and omnipresent nature of fascia, this therapy is best used to open whole sections of the body. The more fascia that can be released, the more your overall pain is decreased and mobility is increased.
