Top 4 Skincare Ingredients to Avoid and Why

With the rise of TikTok skincare trends (think slugging, skin-icing, the rise of K-beauty trends, etc.), it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of trying new products and regimens, but it’s equally hard to decipher what’s safe to try versus what isn’t.

In our quest for radiant skin, it is crucial to be mindful of the ingredients in our skincare regimen. Many of these products can be harmful to our skin and our overall well-being.

Let’s dive into the top 4 skincare ingredients you should avoid and why they might not be the best choice for your skin.

First things first – let’s set the foundation with some best practices on how to identify toxic skincare ingredients. With many beauty and skincare brands jumping on the ‘clean beauty’ bandwagon, boasting claims of being “organic” or “all-natural,” it’s challenging to separate the real ones from the posers. It’s important not to be swayed by these marketing gimmicks and to practice carefully inspecting product labels when shopping to dodge those harmful chemicals.

Now, let’s get into it!

1. Paragons:

Coming in at number one are our old but not-so-good-friends, parabens. You might already be familiar with these sneaky villains if you read our article on purifying your bath routine. Parabens are commonly found in various beauty products such as liquid and/or powder foundation, sunscreen, shampoo, and of course many skincare products.

What are they: Parabens are part of a group of synthetic preservatives used in skincare products to prevent bacterial growth and prolong their shelf life.

Why do I need to avoid it? Let’s just say parabens are jacks of many trades! They are synthetic preservatives, but they are also categorized as “endocrine disruptors.”

Let’s pause here for a second:

What are endocrine disruptors? Endocrine disruptors, or EDCs, are natural or artificial chemicals that mimic or interfere with the body’s hormonal balance. Although research is still ongoing, connections have been made between certain conditions and EDCs—reproductive issues, diabetes, and breast cancer, to name a few.

In other words, it’ll be best to avoid them!

What to look for instead: Look for products labeled as “paraben-free.” Also, consider natural alternatives like vitamin E.

    2. Phthalates:

Sorry to break it to you Barbie but, life in plastic is not that fantastic. Coming in at number two, we have Phthalates, the Robin to plastic’s Batman.

What are they: Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible. They’re also used to help fragrances last longer.

Why do I need to avoid it?: Similar to parabens, phthalates are also endocrine disruptors.

What to look for instead: Check those labels! Find products that are labeled as phthalate-free or fragrance-free.

    3. Synthetic Fragrances:

Fragrances? Like the stuff we use to smell nice? Yes, those fragrances—well, the synthetic ones at least. They might seem harmless, but they can mask harmful chemicals.

What are they: Synthetic fragrances are artificial compounds used to create pleasing scents in skincare and beauty products (aka the good smelling stuff)

Why do I need to avoid it? Fragrances can hide numerous undisclosed chemicals behind that sweet scent. Some of these chemicals can be allergens or irritants that can disrupt hormonal function and lead to skin sensitivity, headaches, or respiratory issues. If left unchecked, these things can impact your overall health.

What to look for instead: Inspect those product labels! Choose products labeled “fragrance-free”. You can also check for products that use natural essential oils to ensure they are derived from non-toxic sources.

    4. Talc:

What is it: Talc is a mineral compound used in skincare and cosmetic products for its absorbent properties (think dry shampoo and baby powder).

Why do I need to avoid it?: Because talc is mined so closely to asbestos (a carcinogen that is harmful when inhaled or ingested), it can often become contaminated with this substance. Talc has been linked to skin irritation, respiratory issues, and ovarian cancer.

What to look for instead: Look for products labeled as being “talc-free”

They say that your body is a temple, right? Then, it’s time that we treat our bodies better! Hormonal imbalance, acne, and various forms of cancer are definitely on the rise – likely as a side effect of one, if not all, of these harmful chemicals. By ditching the toxic ingredients and opting for safer options, not only will you eliminate exposure to harmful chemicals but you can also see improvements in other areas of your body, including hormonal health, energy levels, and skin clarity.
